A Heartfelt Donation

Gabrielle Fario, a senior at Sussex Technical High School, DE, raised $300 for the National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program. The donation, which she raised through a fundraiser at her local Applebee’s, was the result of her senior project, entitled “Heart Disease Among Firefighters: Leading Cause of On-Duty Deaths.”
As addressed in Fario’s project, heart disease is the number one cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities each year. The NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program combats this serious health issue through education, awareness, and resources. The program promotes fitness, nutrition, and healthy living to all members of fire and emergency services, both volunteer and career.
“Gabrielle’s support for a heart-healthy fire service is inspirational,” said NVFC Executive Director Heather Schafer. “To realize the significance of this issue at such a young age is a great indication of her maturity and foresight. We appreciate her generosity and thoughtfulness.”
Fario summed up the reason for her donation in the accompanying letter to the NVFC. “I want firefighters across the country to become healthy heart!”
