|Thursday, 11 December 2008|
The NVFC Heart-Healthy Firefighter Work Group held its biannual meeting on November 6 at the NVFC headquarters in Greenbelt, MD, to review the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program and provide input and guidance on its current initiatives and future direction. The Work Group consists of professionals from national fire service organizations as well as health and safety-related organizations.
NVFC staff members began the meeting by highlighting the successes the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program had in 2008, including updates on the Health and Fitness Advocate workshops, Heart Fair, National Firefighter Health Week, and the creation of the NVFC Health and Safety Committee. Gail Fast of L&T Health and Fitness, a fitness management and health promotion company that serves on the Work Group, provided an overview of the results from the health screenings the Program conducted at four trade shows during the year. Maryanne Bailey from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) gave an overview of the grant-funded joint research project that the NVFC and JHSPH are conducting regarding firefighter health and wellness.
The meeting closed with a brainstorming session regarding the future direction of the program. Topics included increased grassroots-level outreach, expanding the scope of the Program, and developing additional partnerships.
“Each Work Group member provided valuable input towards the direction of our new and existing initiatives,” said Maggie Wilson, NVFC Director of Health and Safety. “We rely on the expertise of the Work Group members to guide the Program along the most effective and useful path. We are excited to move forward with the next stage of the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program.”
