Presents Train-the-Trainer Workshop to Promote Department Health Advocates
The National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program wrapped up another busy trade show season with a successful booth exhibit and Train-the-Trainer workshop at Fire-Rescue International (FRI). The show was held on August 15-16 in Denver, CO, and was attended by over 15,000 fire and emergency service leaders.
NVFC Director of Health and Safety, Maggie Wilson, teamed up with Gail Fast and Ken Viglio of L&T Health and Fitness, a fitness management and health promotion company, to present a Train-the-Trainer workshop. The session showed attendees how they can start a health and wellness program within their department. Topics included nutrition, fitness, medical standards, behavior change, and other factors in maintaining a department health and wellness program. The session provided information on the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program’s new Health and Fitness Advocate initiative, which launched earlier in the month with a two-day workshop in Greenbelt, MD.
In addition to the workshop, hundreds of FRI attendees visited the NVFC’s interactive booth to receive free blood pressure, cholesterol, and body composition screenings through the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program. Chef Joseph Bonanno Jr. provided cooking demonstrations and samples of tasty, heart-healthy meals. Well-known as the Firehouse Chef, Bonanno is a 21-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department and is a certified fitness trainer and nutritionist. The booth also featured publications and resources from the Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, as well as information about other NVFC programs including Fire Corps and the National Junior Firefighter Program.
“Trade shows provide us with an excellent opportunity to meet with the grassroots fire service and create awareness about the importance of keeping their hearts strong and healthy,” said Maggie Wilson, NVFC Director of Health and Safety. “We are very thankful to our sponsors, L&T Health and Fitness, Chef Joe Bonanno, and to our Board Members who help us staff the booth at each show. It was another great season for the NVFC."
